Our 15 years of age, the business account of the company check was just hit with dozens of bad checks presented payment to the consumer fraud in the Craig's List. So far, the total exceeds $ 100,000. Small businesses have enough to kill dragons without having to worry about "Catch Me If You Can" forger and fraudster. I'm not Tom Hanks and the offender is not Leonardo DiCaprio – But I hope this article helps protect consumers and businesses.

There are about three weeks, the day began with a phone call to my company of a woman in New Jersey, said he said he had received $ 4600 for the payment of a car he sold on Craig's List. She told me that the check was written for my company and the call to see if it was legitimate. My answer is not.

I plugged it into my account and I saw one of these counterfeit checks, this time for $ 3,800, had already taken account of our society. I immediately contacted Bank of America and has implemented the following:

• Closing has 15 years of age.
• It has opened a new account.
• He earned $ reimbursed by the bank for the amount of counterfeiting of 3800 who had already retired.
• This is the scramble to replace two legitimate checks that I wrote my suppliers who had not yet been cashed.
• He had to change all accounts that use ACH for the automatic transfer of funds to and from my business.
• Referred the matter to FBI
• Impact on the total time for me and my business for the whole problem: about 4 hours.
• Total cost in dollars for me — zero. Bank of America has even offered to cover any costs that may incur returned marked.

Apparently based on the half-dozen calls reaching the objective of another control, the thief tries to buy used vehicles from ads across the country – From California to New Jersey to Texas – with every chance they are scam on Craig's List.

Unfortunately, people who sell their cars are risk factors. Bank of America does not seem to have been burned by any of them because it simply reverses the deposit unwary sellers who deposited the checks in good faith. Hopefully very little, if any, vendors have sent their shares to the curve and are smart enough wait for verification from the bank and more.

Note, once the criminal has your account information, which does almost no matter if the account has no money or is closed. You can always keep the issue of forged checks.

On my post-mortem on how which this could happen, the weakest link seems to have been our Company website clean. Two of my companies, CEO of Resources and startup Business of the University, are for our international clients, consultant who specializes in creating companies and their leaders. In Consequently, many prefer to send money to us instead of using credit cards or mailing checks.

As many companies, large and small, have published the wiring instructions on our website. Part of this statement includes the number of cables account and routing number. These two bits of information with your name and business address, are all a thief apparently necessary to produce an audit counterfeiting.

If you have this information published today, I propose:

• Do what I did – And delete this information.
• Manage requests for wiring one by one.
• Protect your account and routing numbers and passwords
